The original X-Men were a group of Mutants gathered by Professor Charles Xavier. At his school for Gifted Youngsters, Xavier trained the mutants how to use their powers and taught them that humans and mutants could exist together in harmony. The original X-Men were Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Iceman and Beast. X-Men also fought to defend mutants and even humans from the threat of Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants.
The two groups clashed many times over the years. The ranks of both groups grew as the years went by but always, the X-Men seemed to come out on top. Eventually, during a fateful confrontation with the X-Men and Magneto, Professor Xavier was forced to stop Magneto permanently. After wiping Magneto's mind, the founder of the X-Men changed fort the worse. His personality mixed Magneto's and twisted him into the hateful being known as Onslaught.
In a devastating assault, Xavier, as Onslaught, laid waste to the school. Amidst the ruins he battled with his own X-Men. During the confrontation, Onslaught had the chance to kill many of his fallen students. The first of his X-Men, Cyclops, stood alone to stop him. With a heavy heart, he was forced to choose between his teammates or his mentor. It was a choice he would hope never to have to make again. As the original Xavier school crumbled around them, Cyclops killed Onslaught and with him, his mentor and friend.
In the aftermath, many of the X-Men felt that the dream was dead. Without Xavier, they did not want to continue the fight. They left the X-Men and the Institute to go live their lives in peace. Others felt angry at Cyclops for killing Xavier and blamed him. Those who left like this have moved on to continue the fight in their own way or with other groups. A small few of the X-Men stayed by Cyclops side. These few helped him rebuild the Institute in memory of their mentor and have stood by Cyclops side to train the next generation of X-Men.
