Southern Germany.
Scott sat in the rented car just outside of the train station. A coffee in his cup holder sat steaming beside him, quickly losing its heat due to the frigid cold outside. The passenger seat was a mess of papers - maps, tickets and a series of letters. It was one of these letters that Scott Summers, leader of the X-Men, was reading in an almost hypnotized state. The correspondence was between his former mentor, Charles Xavier, and a mutant somewhere here in Germany. The two of them had been talking a lot prior to the events on Genosha and Xavier's fall. These letters were a part of Xavier that Scott had never known about. It was both nice to read his teacher's words again and painful as they went had-in-hand with memories of Xavier's final hours.
Who was this Kurt Wagner? Xavier had offered him a place with the X-Men but Scott had never heard him even mention the mutant. Kurt's story, as he discussed briefly in the letters, was a heart-breaking one and Scott of course agreed with Charles in having invited him. Which was why Scott was here after all. Since finding the letters in Xavier's safe, Scott had become almost obsessed with meeting this other mutant who had talked so much with the founder of the X-Men. Even though in one of the letters, Kurt had declined invitation, Scott was hoping that he could talk with him more about it. Perhaps he was even searching for more. Scott wanted to also tell Kurt in person about the fate of Xavier. He deserved to know.
Placing the letters aside, Scott looked over his maps once more, checked the route to the monastery and started the car down the road. Absentmindedly, he sipped at his coffee and nearly spit it out. "Cold," he cursed to himself. How long had he been sitting there?
The drive into the country and up to the monastery was slow going. The sun was setting and the roads where freezing from the winter cold. But Scott didn't mind. It gave him time to think about what he would say to this Kurt Wagner. How he would begin the conversation. And what it was he was really after. According the the letters, Kurt was a priest. Perhaps that was why Scott was really here. Perhaps he was seeking forgiveness.
It was dark by the time Scott found the abbey. He quickly tossed the letters and maps into his satchel and stepped out of the car. He didn't see a need to lock it. Walking up to the restored building, Scot couldn't help but notice the architecture of it. Like an old castle, the monastery was designed to be defended. And well too. He wondered if the priests who live here had even considered that. At the large door, Scott carefully lifted the iron door knocker and let it fall on the heavy door twice. He stepped back and waited, his breath creating ghosts in the night air.
