Salem Center was not all that bad. At least, Eric considered, when compared to the small back-watered town he had grown up in. Then, this place was a metropolis! Eric had been wandering around the Mall for over an hour, hadn't spent anything, and yet felt like he had lots still to see. For a weekend, the mall was very crowded, mostly with teenagers and youths, probably all from the school he was suppose to start on Monday. New town. New school. Nothing changes.
He caught a few curious glances from the other teens, and a few unfriendly ones too. I guess people don't much like newcomers around here. Just like home. Eric had to contain himself from smiling. Eventually, he would know most of these people as he went to school, and most likely he and they wouldn't even remember this day. Best not to make a scene then. It was a beautiful February day (which Eric was sad to say he had nothing to do with).
Stopping at the food court to grab a burger combo, Eric considered where to sit. Could he possibly make a terrible social faux pa here before even getting to school? He chose the safe bet, and sat on the ledge of the fountain, half turned, allowing himself a view of the flowing water while still keeping an eye on the foot court. That's when he saw the younger girl. Maybe 10 or 12 years old. She looked tired, and hungry, not to mention more than a little lonely. Her age didn't matter. Eric considered what Scott would do and knew right away what he should. His stomach protested. It was hungry, and it was loud about it. Catching her eye, he lifted the burger, making an offer he hoped she would accept. He just wanted to do right.
