The Brotherhood of Mutants was created by Magneto as a means to counter the X-Men. Trained to follow Magneto's belief in Mutant Supremacy, the Brotherhood clashed with the X-Men many times over the years. While their members have changed many times, there has always been the core select few that stayed true to the Cause. When Magneto formed the island nation of Genosha, the Brotherhood followed him without question.
Even after Magneto founded another group of mutants to follow him, the Acolytes, the Brotherhood stood behind him, believing themselves amoung his first and favorite. Through thick and thin, behind seemingly insane schemes, the Brotherhood has always been faithful to Magneto. But after Xavier defeated him, and wiped his mind, everything changed for the Brotherhood. They stood without a clear leader to follow, and at odds with the Acolytes. The two groups fought viciously against each other - each believing themselves the heirs to Magneto's throne. In the end, when the governments of the world turned on Genosha in retribution for Magneto's crimes, the Brotherhood abandoned Genosha and the Acolytes to their doom.
Fleeing back to America, the group went underground. Several members decided that the fight was over and left to follow their own paths. Those who stayed new that they had to continue Magneto's work. They took over a boarding house in Salem Center, NY, under the guise of House of M. From there they could watch their oldest rival, the X-Men, and prepare to strike when the time was right. Stepping up to lead in Magneto's absence, longtime member Mystique filled the roles of leadership. She has given her ally, Grim a more secondary position, choosing instead to run the House of M, recruiting new Upstart mutants for Mystique to use against the X-Men.
