Physical Description:
Lucien possesses a noble bearing and carries himself with the pride of old world aristocracy. Blessed or afflicted with heterochromia, Lucien’s left eye is hazel and his right eye is blue. At 5’ 7", he is not physically imposing, but his personality and intimidating glare has faced down many enemies. Almost always dressed in the highest of fashions, there is a certain Victorian-like flare to his style. Even his hair, slicked back with a rapier thin mustache and devil’s goatee, Lucien has been accused of being a trend setter; where in fact he is simply portraying the looks of his time. Lucien has a youthful face, but there exists a coldness or falsehood to his appearance, and with good reason. Beneath the perfect image of nobility lies a monster ready to devour the world.
Decades, if not centuries, of concentration and focus have resulted in maintaining his image from a time when he was in the prime of his life. When he fully delves into the deepest darkness of his powers or gives way to the anger within, the monster that he truly is stares his enemies in the face. Testament appears as a burnt, charred youth with obsidian black skin that is covered in a lattice of scars, some of which weep blood when he becomes agitated. Fractured bone pierce the skin in a few areas, and his voice becomes like the dry desert wind. His eyes become empty black orbs, the Testament’s true visage is that of death incarnate – rage given physical form.
Personality Demeanor:
At the heart of things, Lucien is afraid. Afraid of himself, what he has done and what he could do. To keep this fear hidden and controlled, he falls back into his upbringing before his world changed. Lucien Graves is a pure gentleman. Born to a long dead aristocracy, the stern upbringing is difficult to break, even after so long. Every movement he makes, every word he speaks, is practiced, poised, and precise. He has a calmness to his voice, which has allowed him to disarm even the mightiest adversary. His charm and wit are part and parcel of his regal demeanor. His past has taught him the ignorance of man, and he has a strong hatred for humans. As a pro-mutant – more like anti-human, Lucien can spout verses to inspire and enrage. Perhaps this persona’s disarming charm is what makes it so frightening when he gives in to his anger. The stir of rage in his eyes, the venomous contempt in his voice when you have offended him is worse than any blow a weapon could deliver.
The Testament, however, when Lucien gives way to his darker, more primal urges, is everything a gentleman is not. Generally beyond words, he speaks through actions, the more violent, louder his “voice.” Logic and reason are useless as only his need to sate his bloodlust can end his rage.
Mutation:
Lucien is a External. His mutant ability allows him to reconstitute himself, reforming his body after being destroyed, returning to its former state and reconstructing every piece of his body out of place. In addition, Lucien can create illusions that effect all five senses, changing the way people perceive the world around them. He has used this power to great effect to hide the monster he has become.
Flaws:
Lucien's ability to reconstitute himself has varying times of effect, depending on the damage done. Cuts and non lethal wounds are rebuilt almost immediately, where as aggravated wounds and killing blows can take hours, days or even longer. The biggest weakness of this power is the toll it has taken on his appearance after centuries of use. Lucien's true appearance is hideous, a monster from the darkest nightmares. Perhaps this is because the power is not natural. Originally he was born with a strong healing factor, but it was augmented on a genetic level by his previous benefactor.
The illusions created by Lucien all have a "tell," something subtle to hint at their falseness. For each person it is slightly different, and deeply personal. Also, while he has created an image for himself, any illusion beyond that is limited to affecting only one individual at a time. The image of Lucien is limited to that alone. He cannot change his appearance to look like anyone.
Personally, Lucien has trouble with his emotions and is prone to biblical fits of anger. He has worked hard to control this, which has only strengthened his fits when they do come. At these times, the facade of Lucien gives way, either partially, hinting at disfigurement, or completely dropping for all to see the Testament in its true horror.
Hobbies & Aptitudes:
Lucien is a master manipulator. He was raised to be an aristocrat and taught the subtleties of politics and manipulation. After centuries of use, his tongue is his most dangerous weapon. As a gentleman, he has studied the art of fencing and when wielding the hidden blade within his cane, Lucien can cut almost as deep as his tongue.
History:
Lucien Graves was born in 1644, at the height of Victorian England, although he does not remember these days as more than a fading dream. When his mutant ability to create illusion first erupted, Lucien was not afraid of his power, but instead saw a tool to wield to obtain even more power. Ambitious and power hungry, the young man used his illusions to drive his mother mad, even tricking her into sleeping with his uncle. When his father learned of her adultery, in no small part thanks to Lucien, he strangled her on the estate's front balcony. The murder was too public to cover up and his father was arrested and subsequently hung for his crime. Lucien inherited the estate and position of his father, becoming the Duke of his county.
But this wasn't enough for the power hungry Duke. Over time he attempted a more daring plot to rise in power, but over reached himself - exposing his unnatural powers. Since mutants were not known of, he was declared a witch. The only obvious explanation for his abilities was a pact with the devil. The irony of that thought and what transpired next is not lost on Lucien, even today. After his trial, he was summarily sentence to public flaying and death by pyre. With his healing factor, it took four days for him to perish this way. After the third day, a single guard was left to watch over the execution. This was when He came to Lucien. Saviour or damnation, perhaps both. The stranger killed the guard and removed the charred mutant from the fire. He offered Lucien a chance take his vengeance not just on the people who sought to kill him, but all of humanity. Unaware of his External heritage and desperate to live, Lucien accepted. His benefactor used strange machinery and his own mutant powers to alter Lucien's genetic powers, altering the healing factor to complete reconstitution. He renamed Lucien as Testament, a shining example of the power of his master and the power of those fit to survive. The process was not flawless though and the effects of the pyre never fully recovered, leaving Testament as a charred monster.
For three hundred years, Testament did the bidding of his dark master. He would arrive in a place or to a group of people, usually mutants, challenge them to prove that they we strong enough to survive, and for those who did rise to the challenge, he spread the word of his master. For those who failed, Testament was the last thing they ever saw. As the human-mutant war became to gain momentum, Testament saw the dark future that his master sought to achieve and for the first time in centuries, he hesitated in his duty. In the moment of clarity, he realized that there would be no place for him when the work was done and the world in ashes. Testament used his powers to regain the image of Lucien Graves and fled, seeking a place in the world where he could escape his master.
After years of hiding and looking over his shoulder, Lucien learned of Genosha - the mutant paradise. Lucien took the first opportunity to move there and live amoung his fellow mutants. With the island being devastated by the human governments and Magneto being disposed by the X-Men, Lucien followed them and the Brotherhood to Salem Center where he could watch both groups. Lucien Graves knows it is all temporary. Tomorrow will eventually come, and his former dark master's will cannot so easily be halted.
